FEDON – Félag doktorsnema og nýdoktora við Háskóla Íslands

Kæru meðlimir FEDON,

Gleðilegt ár! Við vonum að þið hafið haft það gott um hátíðirnar og hafið getað fyllt á orkubirgðirnar fyrir komandi önn.

Síðasta hálfa árið höfum við lagt hart að okkur við að berjast fyrir réttindum doktorsnema og nýdoktora. Við höfum tekið þátt í ýmsum íslenskum ráðstefnum auk þess að funda með stéttarfélaginu og háskólanum með það að markmiði að sýna þær áskoranir sem samfélag okkar stendur frammi fyrir og koma sameiginlegum athugasemdum okkar á framfæri. Þetta hefur meðal annars falið í sér að berjast fyrir því að lágmarksþröskuldur fyrir full réttindi í starfsmenntunarsjóði BHM verði lækkaður og því að réttindi nýdoktora innan stéttarfélagsins verði tryggð. Takmarkaður aðgangur að styrkjum og tregða til þess að skilgreina hlutverk okkar innan háskólans (þrátt fyrir að við séum einir virkustu meðlimir akademíunnar) er enn vandi sem setur bæði doktorsnema og nýdoktora í óþægilega stöðu. 

Á komandi vorönn fer fram kjör til nýs rektors Háskóla Íslands. Við leggjum áherslu á það að okkar raddir skipta máli og þær heyrast best ef við stöndum saman. Við hvetjum ykkur til þess að mæta á fundi með frambjóðendum og spyrja þá erfiðra spurninga. 

Við hlökkum til þess að halda áfram baráttunni á komandi ári. Meðal verkefna sem við erum með í pípunum er könnun á aðstæðum og velferð doktorsnema og nýdoktora við háskólann. Við vonumst til þess að samstarf náist við aðra háskóla svo hægt verði að koma könnuninni á framfæri sem víðast og fá betri skilning á aðstæðum ungra rannsakenda á Íslandi.

Við munum halda áfram að berjast fyrir réttindum doktorsnema og nýdoktora við Háskóla Íslands á næstkomandi mánuðum. Ef þið viljið koma einhverjum tilteknum málefnum á framfæri megið þið senda okkur tölvupóst á fedon@hi.is.

Dear Members of FEDON,

Happy New Year! We hope you had good holidays and were able to recharge for the new academic semester ahead. 

Over the past six months, our commitment to advocating for the interests of PhD students and postdocs has been unwavering. We have actively participated in various Icelandic conferences, meetings with unions and the university with the aim of highlighting the challenges faced by our community and bring our collective concerns to the table. This includes addressing issues such as the push for an decrease in the minimum salary required to apply for the full vocational education fund from BHM, as well as advocating for better rights for postdocs within unions. Limited funding and unwillingness to define our role within the university (despite being one of the most productive members of the academia) continues to put both PhD students and postdocs in an awkward state of limbo. 

As the elections for the university rector are coming up this Spring, we emphasize the power our voices can have collectively. We urge you to participate in meetings with the candidates, even if they are held in Icelandic, and ask tough questions. 

Looking forward to the coming year, we remain steadfast in our support for you. We are excited to announce our plan to launch a survey focused on the conditions and wellbeing of PhD students and postdocs at the University of Iceland. We hope to collaborate with other universities as well to spread the survey and get a better understanding of Icelandic early career researchers.
