Á Uglu er nú að finna skjal frá mannauðsdeild háskólans sem ber nafnið Réttindi og skyldur doktorsnema og doktorsnema sem fá laun frá HÍ. Þetta skjal listar upp þau réttindi og þær skyldur sem launaðir doktorsnemar hafa gagnvart skólanum. Þar má meðal annars nefna að nemendur með ráðningarsamning eiga að hafa aðild að stéttarfélagi en nemendur án ráðningarsamnings hafa ekki aðild að stéttarfélagi, nemandi með ráðningarsamning á rétt á fæðingarorlofi en nemandi án ráðningarsamnings á rétt á fæðingarstyrk o.s.frv.
In Ugla, there is now a file listing the rights and duties of PhD students that receive pay from the university. The file is unfortunately only available in Icelandic at the time this is written. Please feel free to reach out to us for help with translations (but we recommend trying machine translations first). The file lists the rights and duties of a PhD student depending on whether they have an employment contract with UI. For instance, a student that has an employment contract has access to the union (BHM) but a student without a contract does not, a student with an employment contract has the right to a parental leave but a student without a contract has the right to a parental grant (this is not the same thing), etc.

On Ugla, under Schools (in the menu on the left side of the site after logging in), you will find a button called Who at the support service can assist me? There you can find various practical information, for instance who to contact regarding bullying, computer and equipment purchase, who is the contact person for PhD students at your school etc.
Miðstöð framhaldsnáms / The Graduate School
Hjá Miðstöð framhaldsnáms má finna alls kyns gagnlegar upplýsingar er varða doktorsnám, m.a. viðmið og reglur um námið, gagnlegar upplýsingar varðandi styrki og styrkumsóknir, upplýsingar varðandi samstarf við atvinnulífið og sitthvað fleira. Hér má einnig finna hina svokölluðu verkfærakistu doktorsnema en þar er boðið upp á ýmis námskeið sem geta auðveldað okkur lífið á ferlinum. Auk þess er boðið upp á námskeið fyrir leiðbeinendur og umsjónarmenn.
At The Graduate School, you can find all kinds of useful information about your PhD life such as guidelines and regulations regarding your studies, useful information about grants and grant applications, information about cooperation with the industry and plenty of other things. Here you can find the so-called PhD student toolbox which offers various minicourses that help you out on your PhD journey. Additionally, they offer courses for supervisors and advisors.
Umboðsmaður doktorsnema / The Ombudsman for PhD Students
Hlutverk umboðsmanns doktorsnema er að vera hlutlaus aðili sem veitir doktorsnemum ráðgjöf og aðstoð varðandi mögulegar lausnir á vandamálum sem steðja að, upplýsa nema um réttindi þeirra og skyldur, stuðla að bættum samskiptum á milli doktorsnema og leiðbeinanda eða doktorsnefndar og leiðbeina um verkferla í doktorsnáminu. The Ombudsman is an impartial, independent counsel for PhD students who helps them resolve problems that come up in their studies. The Ombudsman informs PhD students of their rights and duties, facilitates their communication with supervisors and doctoral committees, and helps them navigate the rules and procedures of PhD studies. Launamál / Information on salary
Flestir doktorsnemar og nýdoktorar falla undir Félag háskólakennara. Hér er stofnanasamningur HÍ. Doktorsnemar falla undir grunnlaunaflokk 030, sjá launatöflu stjórnsýslu númer 695 (S). Náið í Excel skjalið og veljið flipann sem heitir Mánaðarlaun. 030 er þriðja lína í fyrsta dálki (til vinstri). Upplýsingar um útreikninga á launaflokki nýdoktora má finna á blaðsíðu 2 til 4 í stofnanasamningi og flokkunina má finna í launatöflu 696 (A).
Most PhD students and postdocs belong to The Association of University Teachers. Here you can find the institutional contract (in English) for the university. PhD students’ base salary category is 030 as seen in the general wage table no. 695 (S). Download the Excel file and choose the tab Mánaðarlaun (monthly salary). 030 is the third line in the first column (to the left). Information about the wage category calculations for postdocs can be found in pages 2-4 in the institutional contract and can be found in the wage table for academic staff no. 696 (A).

Athugið að handbókin var gefin út árið 2015 og hefur ekki verið uppfærð í samræmi við nýjustu reglugerðir, t.d. hvað varða sumarfrísrétt sem eru nú 30 dagar óháð aldri. Note that this was published in 2015 and has not been updated according to the latest regulations, for instance with regards to your vacation rights which are 30 days for everyone.
Starfsþróunarsjóður / Professional development fund
Félag háskólakennara er með starfsþróunarsjóð sem doktorsnemar og nýdoktorar geta sótt í m.a. vegna ráðstefnuferða. Af vefsíðunni:
Markmið SFH er að stuðla að markvissri starfsþróun félagsmanna svo sem með því að stunda formlegt nám, sækja ráðstefnur/námskeið, sinna rannsóknum og faglegu samstarfi. Enn fremur er það tilgangur sjóðsins að auka möguleika Háskóla Íslands og tengdra stofnana til að gera félagsmönnum kleift að vinna að verkefnum sem fara saman við markmið beggja.
Styrkhæf verkefni eru: skólagjöld, námskeiðsgjöld þar með talin tungumála og upplýsingatækninámskeið, markþjálfunarnám sem lýkur með gráðu, ráðstefnugjöld, rannsóknamisseri og námsleyfi þar sem viðkomandi vinnuveitandi greiðir ekki allan ferðakostnað, rannsóknasamstarf við erlenda háskóla og rannsóknastofnanir, rannsókna- og námsferðir til erlendra stofnana og annar útlagður ferðakostnaður, m.a. flug- og lestarfargjöld og/eða aksturskostnaður, hótel- og gistikostnaður. Innanbæjarsamgöngur þegar um er að ræða ferð til og frá lokaáfangastað, t.d. flugvelli eða lestarstöð, til endanlegs gististaðar. Akstur innanlands með einka- eða bílaleigubílum er styrktur um sömu upphæð og lægsta fjargjald almenningsvagna nemur.
Starfsmenntunarsjóður BHM stendur doktorsnemum og nýdoktororum einnig til boða.
The association of university teachers has a professional development fund that PhD students and postdocs can apply for, for instance for conference trips. From their website:
The goal of the AUT Professional Development Fund is to promote the systematic professional development of Association members, such as pursuing formal studies, attending conferences/courses, conducting research and professional collaboration. The Fund is also intended to create more opportunities for the University of Iceland and affiliated institutions to enable Association members to pursue mutually beneficial projects.
Projects eligible for funding: Tuition fees, course fees including language and information technology courses, coach training that ends with a degree, conference fees, sabbatical and leave from studes for which the employer in question will not be covering all travel expenses, research collaboration with foreign universities and research institutes, research and study visit to foreign institutions. Other travel expenses, e.g. train and air fares and/or driving expenses, hotel and accommodatin expenses. This includes local transport in the case of a trip to and form a final destination, e.g. airport or train station to the final accommodation. The max. payment for such local transport is kr. 10.000 for each trip. Driving within Iceland, whether travelling by taxi or private vehicle, will be funded up to the same amount as the cheapest public transport fare.
The public sector relief fund from the union (BHM) is also available to PhD students and postdocs.
